Spotlight: y2cl

Y2CL. What is it? A series of comics in a universe that will play with your mind, your morals and a few other things if you let it. It will make you laugh or make you run away in terror, but most of all, it will entertain while making you think. J Horsely III is the creator behind all this madness rolled into one. Started six years ago as a way of making fun of his friends, Y2 Christ (the userid of his friend) wandered here and there on the web. Then it disappeared for a short time before returning, first in September of 2007 and then fulltime in January 2008 as Y2CL (Y2 Christ Lite) in its current format of seven different strips that all take place in the same universe. Sometimes there are crossovers between the strips, but mostly they remain self contained gems of insanity. Do you like Zombies? Do you like Jesus? Do you like Zombie Jesus? Well, head on over to y2cl and get your fill. Between the aforementioned Zombie Jesus, Larry, the Coked-up Bunny, Sergeant Blinky and a few others, you will find yourself eerily compelled to not only bookmark this comic delight, but to dive deep into the archive and see what they have done in the past leading up to their current state of frenzy.

Y2cl, a funny, thought-provking ride that also proves that cartoonists don’t just live in their mother’s basements but can also have a hot wife and wonderful family to boot! So head on over and take a tour of this crazy universe. You won’t regret it…well, maybe you will, but you will find yourself smiling just the same.

Spotlight – Johnny Saturn

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

What happens to superheroes who are growing past their prime years of fighting crime? Johnny Saturn, the webcomic, explores this theme of a superhero who, although his mind is still willing, his body sometimes protests. After all of the years battling evil, his body is starting to show the signs of wear and now John Underhall must deal with how to adapt if he is to continue fighting the good fight.

The comic, created by Scott & Benita Story and drawn by Scott is set in Spire City, a modern metropolis. Spire City is part of a world that has always known superheroes, not as characters in the pages of comic books and pulp fiction, but real, flesh and bone people who battle real villains. For what is a superhero without a villain to fight?…just a person who dresses up in tights and a cape! The comic is updated three times a week, Monday, Wednesday & Friday and is already up to Book 10, Page 20.

Scott & Benita bring together a wonderfully complex and tightly interwoven tale of a superhero past his prime but unwilling to give up the mantle. Whether he is fighting villains or his own body to soldier on, the stories are compelling to read and the artwork is top notch. No matter what I write about it, I will still feel I have not done the comic justice in describing it because of its complexity. With over three years worth of strips, it may take you a while to catch up, but it will be well worth the read. Suffice it to say, it is definitely worth bookmarking and following along with the updates. But be forewarned, it covers adult situations so it is definitely PG13.

As the Pendulum Swings

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Oh how the political parade never ends! For eight years, Democrats had to listen to Republicans cry out that if you didn’t listen to the President, you were a traitor. You were either with them or against them and it was unpatriotic to say anything bad against W. Now, the pendulum swings the other way and a Democrat is now in the office of President of the United States. Now it is the Republicans who are turning the other way and saying to not listen to the President. They are the ones keeping their kids out of school for fear they will be “brainwashed” by Obama when he talks to their children from the White House. They are the ones not wanting their kids to hear Obama speak about taking charge of their education and setting goals to meet to make sure they learn as much as they can to make themselves a better person. What happened to the mantra they said for eight years about not listening to the President makes you a traitor and unpatriotic? Yes, do not listen to Mr. Obama, keep yourself from taking charge of your education. Parents are saying that they don’t think their kids should be told what to do by the President, that it is THEIR job to do that. Yes, parents of the United States, you are doing a bang-up job raising your kids. Kids aren’t kids for very long these days, are they? And their education is the worst it has been in decades.

So when the Republicans get back into office, and it will happen as our choices are always one from column A or one from column B, will they once again jump on Democrats as being unpatriotic and traitors when they speak out against the elected official? It will be right up there with death and taxes, inevitable. But for now, please, practice what you preach and realize that you do live in a country that permits you the freedom to speak out on whomever occupies the highest office in the land and that you many not always have someone from your team at the plate to bat. If that is the case, remember, we are all humans on the same team, floating on a chunk of rock in space, orbiting a star on an outer arm of a large galaxy, doomed to be swallowed by another galaxy in a few million years. Our lives are so infinitesimally short compared to that enormous span of time. So in the grand scheme of things relax, chill out and take a deep breath. The pendulum will swing the other way soon enough. Lather, rinse, repeat.
