Comic of the Week: Chirault by varethane

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Hi Grovers! How was your weekend? I hope it was a pleasant one! Welcome to another installment of the Comic of the Week. Each week, I’ve been posting a comic from the SpiderForest collective, which Willow’s Grove is a part of (hence the banner way up at the top there). This spotlight this week falls on Chirault by varathane. It’s been going since 2007 and updates every Friday. This comic is a pure fantasy comic with a fully realized world (check out the map on the “about” page) that has demons and cities constantly on the verge of destruction. So head on over and read the adventures of Kiran and Teeko as well as a large supporting cast of characters.

Comic of the Week: Twilight Lady by Blake JK Chen

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Hi there Grovers! Here we are at another Spiderforest Collective comic in the spotlight for Comic of the Week. This week we turn to Twilight Lady by Blake JK Chen. What do you get when you take an immortal spirit born into an human who doesn’t really like being a human, so it creates another mind within its own for when it doesn’t really want to deal with all that it takes to exist in a physical body. Okay, so far so good…now, what happens when that alternate mind decides its going to become the dominant personality of this physical body? Well, you have yourself Twilight Lady.

The comic is well drawn and the coloring is fantastic! The comic is updated Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and there are over 400 installments to go through. In fact its creator feels that this is quite overwhelming to the new reader and suggests you jump in at this spot and catch up from the beginning at your leisure. Believe me, you won’t be sorry to bookmark this wonderful comic!

Comic of the Week: Spare Keys for Strange Doors by Lucy Lyall

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Hey Grovers! Welcome to another installation of Comic of the Week! This week, we feature the SpiderForest.com comic Spare Keys for Strange Doors by Lucy Lyall. This little gem had me hooked from the first story. It tells the tale of two specialists, Toby and Marion, a couple who lives together and are experts at handling the supernatural. Toby can speak to animals and see and interact with ghosts and the undead as well as interact with all kinds of creatures we would call myths because, well, we just can’t see them all the time. Marion on the other hand specializes in the magical side with the ability to manipulate the elements as well as see some of the creatures Toby can see, except for the spirits of the recently departed.

The couple are hired to offer solutions to things people and the police can’t explain, don’t want to interact with or can’t deal with either because they can’t see it, don’t want to see it or it is beyond their comprehension. They know something is happening, something mysterious, so they hire or call on the local Specialists, Toby and Marion. To compare them to ghost busters would absolutely understate just what they can do.

The stories are well written and humourous, but touching all at the same time. Lucy handles the mix of drama and comedy quite well and her artwork is fantastic. Listen, do yourself a favor and bookmark this one. It has only been going since June of 2011, so make sure you stop by every Thursday for the update…you really won’t be sorry!
